About Us

THE HISTORICAL SETTING
The American Civil War was an historic era in the development of our nation. It was a period of national tragedy marked by heroism, death, and suffrage. Shippensburg was not a battlefield, but from the standpoint of the involvement of the community, it was a staging area for the Confederate troops before the famed Battle of Gettysburg. Shippensburg residents endured the occupation of their town by more than 20,000 Confederates from June 23-30, 1863. For additional information regarding the enemy occupation click here.

OUR EVENT
The 8th annual March To Destiny will take place on June 26-28 2009. This living history event, which sprung to life from a membership drive effort of the Shippensburg Area Civil War Round Table, focuses on Shippensburg's rich Civil War era heritage and the significance of the War Between the States. The 2009 event will include: a parade; street skirmish on King Street; foraging by Confederate troops; period music groups; infantry, artillery, and cavalry troops; community breakfast with the reenactors; firing drills; Sunday afternoon tactical event; Victorian Ball; sutlers; wagon rides; and a food court. For additional information regarding the schedule click here.

THE MARCH TO DESTINY BOARD
The March To Destiny Board, a totally volunteer group, was structured in 2005 to coordinate and oversee the annual March To Destiny event. This group is comprised, for the most part, of individuals who are also members of the Shippensburg Area Civil War Round Table. Over the past four years, the tremendous growth of the March To Destiny event has occupied an ever larger percentage of our volunteers' time and, in some ways, started to overshadow the other activities of the Shippensburg Area Civil War Round Table. Ibis new organizational structure, is allowing both the planning for the March To Destiny event and the other activities of the Round Table to flourish. For a complete list of current Board members click here.

THE SHIPPENSBURG AREA CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE?
The Shippensburg Area Civil War Round Table was established in January of 2001. From the very conception of the Round Table, the process of educating the community has been a primary objective. The Round Table meets on the 23`d Thursday of every other month at the Shippensburg Public Library from 7pm to 9pm. The meetings provide a forum for discussion on the facts, fictions, and essence of the Civil War.

The Round Table is dedicated to creating learning opportunities for the community for both members and the greater community through round table discussions, guest speakers, and special events. The Shippensburg Area Civil War Round Table efforts are not for any purpose of celebration. Rather, they take place so that we may join with the rest of the nation in remembering the great struggle from which our nation emerged united. Furthermore, the Round Table wishes to instill an appreciation and understanding within future generations that our community, too, made its contributions so "that government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from the earth."
