The American Civil War was an historic event in the development of our nation. It was a period of national tragedy marked by heroism, death and suffering . Shippensburg was not a battlefield but the community was involved in the occupation by confederate forces just before the famed Battle of Gettysburg. Shippensburg residents had to endure the occupation of their town by more than 20,000 "enemy" soldiers from June 23rd through June 30th, 1863.
While Shippensburg's involvement in the Civil War is
certainly not on par with Gettysburg, it was in, fact involved in the Civil
War and we should not lose site of this fact. With the intent to educate and
keep alive Shippensburg's role in the Civil War, the Shippensburg Civil War
Roundtable has initiated the annual March to Destiny event. It is not the
Round Table's intent to glorify or celebrate the War, but to join with the
rest of the nation in calling attention to that great struggle from which our
nation emerged united and to record for generations that our community, too,
made it's contributions so "that government of the people, by the people,
and for the people shall not perish from the Earth." |
